Description
Every sailor knows which way windward is.
It's the direction the wind comes from. The side of the boat that takes the weather. The heading you choose when you want to make real progress — when you're done running before it and ready to point into it and work. Windward isn't the easy direction. It's the right one.
This bar was named for that choice.
Windward sails the heart of our coastal collection — lighter and crisper than the mineral anchorage of Driftwood & Stone, fresher and cleaner than the raw wave energy of Surfer Suds. If you want the coast at its most pure, most open, and most alive — this is your bar.
What's in it — and what it actually does
Brazilian clay is the foundation of this bar's cleansing performance — mineral-rich and remarkably gentle. It's known in traditional skincare for its fine texture and mineral content. The result is skin that feels genuinely clean rather than stripped — the coast after a squall has passed and the air has gone crystal clear. That's what Brazilian clay brings to this bar.
Lavender essential oil is one of the most studied botanicals in natural skincare. Not lavender fragrance. Not a synthetic approximation. Lavender essential oil, the way it's been used for centuries. It steadies the blend and keeps the eucalyptus from becoming aggressive — the steady hand on the tiller when the wind picks up.
Eucalyptus essential oil is the breath of this bar — sharp, clarifying, and instantly opening. Combined with lavender it creates something simultaneously invigorating and calming — the olfactory equivalent of standing on a windward rail watching spray come off the bow in the morning light.
Together they smell like the coast pointed into the weather. Clean. Moving. Alive. Exactly like the name.
The base is grass-fed tallow with ingredients from certified organic suppliers — the same uncompromising foundation under every bar we make. Our tallow is grass-fed beef tallow, rich in the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, the kind of fats your skin recognizes as its own. Want to know why tallow? Read more →
Built by a family that has always sailed windward
Our family arrived in America the same year the Beatles did — 1963. An English mother and father who crossed the Atlantic and pointed themselves into a new world without flinching. A great-grandfather before them who crossed from India to England for love. A grandfather who taught a father about boats. A nineteen year old girl sent to sea by a mother who loved her enough to let her go.
A captain whose father handed her the wheel and she never gave it back — who ran cargo on a North Sea trawler named Komla to the Bahamian out islands — legal freight through waters that were busy with far more — and who never once crossed the line because some directions you simply don't sail. Her mother made sure she knew where they were.
And Dolton — conceived at sea during a circumnavigation attempt, born at 23 weeks, 157 days in the NICU, completely blind — who spent the first nine years of his life aboard Syrena in Charleston Harbor. Every Captain's Bar is Brailled by hand. Dolton Brailles them himself and will Braille anything else from our product line, right down to our welcome card, free on request. Because if you can't read it independently, it isn't finished. Because accessibility isn't a feature we added. It's the heading we've always been on.
This family has always known which way windward is. This bar is proof.
Small batch. Grass-fed tallow. Ingredients from certified organic suppliers. Every Captain's Bar Brailled by hand.
The wind is out there. Point yourself into it.
